HMS IllustriousHMS Illustrious was a Majestic class pre-dreadnought used as a guardship early in the First World War. In the original pre-war mobilisation plan the entire class was to form the 7th Battle Squadron of the Channel Fleet. The role of the Illustrious changed twice in August 1914. At the start of the war a nearly completed Turkish dreadnought was seized, and taken into the Royal Navy as HMS Erin.

Why exactly did telegraphs have to use “STOP” instead of a period and “QUOTE” instead of a quotation mark? (Or special codes.)

Why exactly did telegraphs have to use “STOP” instead of a period and “QUOTE” instead of a quotation mark? (Or special codes.)

I've seen/read numerous old telegraph messages. They contain a lot of spelled-out punctuation. Why didn't they simply have the most basic few characters as part of the code, or at least turn a "STOP"
